Reserve base "completely destroyed" in cyber-terror attack
2/27/2007 — MITCHELL IAP AIR RESERVE STATION, WI (AFNEWS) — A cyber-terror attack shut down the Mitchell IAP Air Reserve Station on Monday, home of the 440th Airlift Wing. "They experienced a power failure and they have not been able to restore it," said 440th Public Affairs Director Denise Daring.
Cyber-terrorists created the power outage Sunday night, affecting 300 full-time workers and some reservists. Joe Weiss, a power industry security expert, told the Air Force it would take six months or more to restore power after the cyber-attack. Weiss later declared the airfield a "total loss," Daring said. "We're forced to abandon this base, which is a shame. The 440th had a long and distinguished history here."
An emergency "website activation task force" will relocate the 440th wing to a base in North Carolina so they can plug in their computers.
